What is RSS?
RSS is essentially a way to subscribe to content from a website meaning that you don't have to visit the site constantly to look for updates. You can receive alerts when new content arrives on the website in question.
You may recognize the universal feed icon from websites and blogs. These icons represent content in any format - text, audio or video - to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen using a feed reader.
For more information on feeds, FeedBurner has an excellent introduction to RSS.
